Why Is The Audio Interface Important?

Music Without Cables? – The New Generation Of Wireless Audio Transmitter Gadgets

A large number of wireless audio transmitter products have emerged over the years. They promise to cut the cables to your audio equipment. Can these devices make good on their claim to eliminate the cable clutter? What impact has changing technology had on their performance?

Wireless transmission of music has begun with the launch of commercial radio broadcasts several decades ago. While still being popular now, FM radio is now being replaced by new technologies such as HD radio, satellite radio and DAB broadcasts. Today’s wireless consumer products such as wireless speaker kits, baby monitors, Bluetooth audio transmitters and wireless microphones eliminate the cord.

Installing speakers in another room and distributing music throughout the house are some of the applications of wireless audio. Many houses are not wired for audio. We will look at the advantages and disadvantages of today’s wireless audio technologies.

Let’s look at the most traditional technology first: FM broadcasts. FM audio transmitters send the audio by using a high-frequency signal which is constantly changing in frequency according to the audio signal. This technology is known as frequency modulation or FM. It is fairly simple to implement. Therefore FM transmitters are very cost-effective. In addition, FM transmission offers high range. As a result, the majority of today’s 900 MHz wireless headphones use FM transmission. However, FM has some major drawbacks.

FM transmissions will pick up noise which is noticeable as a background hiss based on the location of the wireless receiver. The reason for the varying quality is a phenomenon known as multipath fading which is a result of reflected radio waves cancelling each other out. Some wireless FM transmitters utilize two antennae in an attempt to cope with this phenomenon (diversity receivers). FM radios will easily pick up interference from other consumer devices which is another problem.

Bluetooth based audio transmitters have gained popularity recently. Bluetooth is a common wireless protocol which was designed primarily as an interface between computer peripheral products. Bluetooth will convert he audio into a digital format. This data is then broadcast via the Bluetooth wireless protocol. One of the advantages is the high robustness against wireless interference. On the other hand, Bluetooth was not designed for audio transmissions. Therefore is does have several problems. The first drawback is the limited range which normally would be 30 ft or less. The next drawback is the fact that Bluetooth does not have sufficient space to transmit CD-quality audio and consequently the audio is compressed first. This compression will result in a loss of audio quality depending on the amount of compression. The last problem is the fact that Bluetooth will introduce a delay in the signal (also called latency) which is a problem when used together with video because the audio will be out of sync or if used in a surround sound setup where some of the loudspeakers would be out of sync with the hard-wired speakers.

Terrestrial digital and satellite radio technologies offer high range but use extensive audio compression and have an audio delay of up to several seconds.

The technology used in Amphony’s wireless audio transmitters sends audio in a digital format without audio compression. By avoiding audio compression, the signal will keep the original quality. This technology offers an audio latency of less than 1 ms. Therefore these transmitters can be used for wireless speaker kits in a home theater system and other real-time applications.

By using error correction, this technology can cope with interference from competing wireless products which is key in today’s noisy environment. The Amphony transmitters operate at 5.8 GHz. This frequency space is less crowded than the 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz bands consequently leading to a further improvement of reliability. In contrast to Bluetooth, any number of wireless receivers can operate from a single wireless audio transmitter which is a concern when sending audio to numerous rooms within a residence.
